Sonny Terry Estate Harmonica - Unusual Hohner Navy Band / Golden Melody- # 54-55 Key of G
Hohner Navy Band / Golden Melody
Key of G
Original Box Not Included
This is a very unusual harmonica. It si a well-worn Navy Band in G that has a Navy Band G top cover and a Golden Melody Bb cover on the bottom. Yes - it has mismatched covers. The Navy Band is the first plastic combed harmonica that Hohner made and it is the predecessor to the Golden Melody. This is the only harmonica I have found in the collection that shows any signs of repair. It has all the classic signs of extensive use. The covers are tarnished and crushed at the back. The comb is scratched and chipped and dinged up. There is a little bit of dried saliva on the inside of the comb. Of course, we have no way of knowing for sure what the story with this harmonica is but the original Navy Band covers are more crushed than the Golden Melody covers. I would speculate that the bottom Navy Band cover became damaged to the point where it need to be replaced. Quite possibly it was a harp that Sonny liked enough to repair rather than retire. I can understand why. It still plays beautifully.
The harmonica will be shipped in an attractive shadow box display case, and will include an 8X10 glossy black and white photo of Sonny - suitable for framing. An individually signed Certificate of Authenticity and Bill of Sale will also be included.
